We started our first weekend with a hike around Isernia to the cute hillside villages of Miranda and Pesce. The forecast was not great but we managed to complete most of our loop before the weather flipped and a friendly ranger had to rescue us from a thunderstorm.

Sunday was still cool and gloomy so we borrowed a car and visited the roman ruins of Saepinum.

On the way back we left the main road for some windy mountain tracks through the high mountains. This road less traveled lead us past the ski resort of Campitello Matese, over some impressive passes, around Lago Matese, and finally back into Isernia.
